Designer in San Francisco.
📍 In SF this week: “Designers, it’s time to ship.” @framer's new billboard hit a nerve. Every designer I’ve talked to has seen it, and everyone has a take. In Framer’s case, shipping means going from design to live site in one tool. But right now, the message lands differently. Designers are being pushed to launch and take ownership. @ycombinator recently invited designers to become founders. The logic makes sense. As AI levels the technical playing field, design seems to be one of the few areas where meaningful differentiation still happens, especially through taste. At recent events, I’ve noticed a slight split: Junior designers are excited. They know how to spot problems, empathize, and prototype quickly. Tools are now accessible. Building feels possible. At the same time, many are unsure where traditional roles are headed as AI advances. Even YC says, “The design job of the future is founder.” Senior designers (at least the few I’ve spoken with) are more cautious. Not negative, just realistic. They’ve seen what happens when speed gets mistaken for progress. It’s easy to ship something polished that solves the wrong problem. AI is definitely making it easier to build, but not easier to decide what’s worth building. Design alone won’t carry a product. Timing, distribution, and strategy matter just as much (especially when what you’re building today might get crushed by next month’s platform update). Many engineers I talk to are already building something or actively looking for a co-founder. That mindset is common, especially here. It’s almost assumed that if you can code, you’ll eventually start something. With designers, it’s different. Most I know aren’t making that leap. Many freelance or consult. Few are launching products (some definitely are, but it’s still rare enough to stand out). The shift from contributor to founder still feels unfamiliar for a lot of people in design. I’m not founding anything yet. But I’m experimenting, building side projects, and staying close to the shift. And I'll keep passing by this billboard. It feels good to be addressed.
