My mom was an admin at an entertainment law firm, but she taught me more about business than any lawyer I've met. At industry parties full of hip-hop royalty and big-shot attorneys, everyone remembered HER by the end of the night, because she actually cared about people. She'd remember that thing you mentioned three months ago about your daughter, or that small detail about your hometown. Because she'd listen – really listen – then reference it later like she'd been carrying it around waiting for the right moment. These little nuanced things that were honest, sincere. She had a courage in going deep, in avoiding surface level conversation. I was in awe of her, and I think others were, too. My mom passed in September of 2020 - right when Horizons was taking off. I ended up naming my fund after her – @MARINDIGITALVEN. When I meet founders now, I'm reminded about what she showed me: there's something interesting in everybody - the way you approach them determines whether you'll find it.
