Founder in San Francisco.
USA taught me to think big. Canada taught me to make money. The combination is unfair. 18 months ago I left Toronto for SF to build my next company. First week, at a dinner, someone asked what I was working on. I said "stealth startup, just crossed 250k ARR in 60 days." The guy next to me was "redefining AI infrastructure." He had zero customers. I remember thinking: this place is insane. And it is. SF lights money on fire with no plan to make it back. People raise millions before validating a single thing. Toronto taught me the opposite. Make money first. Validate the market. Play defense. My founder friends back home are the most disciplined people I know. But you can't save your way to a great company. It's about how much you can create, not how much you keep. Offense, not defense. Both cultures are half right. Toronto gave me the foundation: resilience and gratitude you can't fake. SF gave me permission to think 10x bigger. Put those together and you can scale faster than most venture-backed startups here without diluting away what you're building. I miss home. The food. My family, who I now see once a year. The community I spent years building, 100+ events, all of it. But I'm betting I can build something world-class out here. And bring it home someday. Canada gave me my start. One day I want to give that back. Happy Canada Day. 馃嚚馃嚘
