Solo maker in India.
Turned 22 yesterday In the last 4 years I’ve: Gotten a 2.4 GPA in college Started and quit my agency making 5 figures (a lot for an 18 year old out of India) Did a 5 month solo backpacking trip across Europe, visited 13 countries Lived in Hawaii for a summer working at a biotech startup Acquired @sourcelyai for $4k and grew it to a valuation of $150k in 4 months Started this X account 10 months ago, grew by 1,000 followers in 2 days, made some unreal connections Here's what my journey has looked like so far, what I've learned, and why I’m just getting started: (and a video of me driving through Hawaii with some nice music video is about as long as it should take you to read this post) 2020-22 Made $25k at 18 doing a high ticket agency business @Eleven_59_ in the education space. It was weird making that much money as a kid in India where so many people make that in their lifetimes, despite working much harder. I felt (still do) that I made the money too quickly and honestly, fairly easily. Yes it was hard work, but things kept getting better and I really couldn’t understand why I felt super disillusioned by everything and also hated the agency model we stopped taking on more clients. Money Isn't The Main Goal Just making money with 1159 didn't make me happy. My past experiences helped me realize that money wasn't quite what I was looking for. It taught me to look beyond for what genuinely made me happy 2022 Did the agency for 1-2 years along with college and then took a break from both to travel. Used some profits to travel for a couple months across Europe. I don’t talk about this trip much on X but it changed my life in many ways. It was quite freeing to just wander with no responsibilities Became comfortable with becoming good friends with strangers I’ll never meet again It enabled me to understand what I genuinely enjoy and what drives me. I can quite confidently say none of this would be possible if I didn’t just roam around with no aim for 5 months. How I make decisions It’s all just inputs and outcomes- identify the relevant ones Know what input/ outcome you’re optimizing for If it is money, freedom, work, or something else Figure it out and then nothing else matters I always differ towards the choice with more freedom There just is something about doing my own thing this has made many decisions for me like: - choosing colleges - career’ decisions (or the lack of them) - trying to raise funding or bootstrapping - quitting the agency - most of my traveling Probably most of my best decisions 10/ 10 Highly recommend, would do again :) After 2022 Taking a break from college and 1159 allowed me to take a step back and reevaluate. Figuring out your priorities & finding your passion is hard But once you know your priorities For me: doing cool shit, freedom You can direct them toward something you are passionate about. Just figure it out as you go, nothing else matters. 2023 back to my natural habitat of building Love at first sight with @acquiredotcom I was just like 👀👀👀 All these cool cool small online businesses. Just for me to look at? 🥹 And I can buy them? For as little as $5,000? It was fr like taking a kid to Disneyland for the first time. I just liked looking at these interesting small businesses, so I started posting about them. Trash posts at first They got better and I began building I just loved looking at cool businesses. I knew that @acquiredotcom was giving me what I wanted, so nothing else mattered. I never really cared much for college and had to prioritize so my GPA went to shit :( Was in Hawaii for the summer doing an internship at a biotech startup My schedule every day Work 5 - 7 am Internship 7 - 3 pm Beach 3 - 5/6 pm Work dinner etc 6 - 12 Didn't really do much besides nature and work On weekends I would take off, go out the entire day for hikes, or cycle around Bought Sourcely in the middle of summer and things started taking off Call me crazy but I honestly feel being so much in nature helped a lot Time in nature can help in any situation, use it to get away, relax, and strategize Truly fell in love with what I was doing Fuck hustle culture Be a builder Relax, there is no need to be constantly switched on (I have to remind myself everyday) I also saw lava which was really cool Some things I learned Firstly ANYONE can do this, I am not doing anything special This is important. Many people excuse themselves by thinking they can't do it, when that really isn't the case. Do the simple and obvious stuff. It isn't always that easy tho. Just keep doing. Weekly sprints are GOATed fr start slow, small & iterate - start small - my initial content was terrible - week-long sprints - reflect (talk to users/ evaluate your results) - iterate accordingly - repeat Expand your time horizons What you can do in 2 years vs 10 years is very different Think in decades and execute in weeks Having a Preference for uncertainty I have always been extremely comfortable with risk I was always doing stupid stuff as a kid so maybe that just numbed my risk tolerance It's just more fun not really knowing where I will be in a few years and what I will be doing then I’ve found that living this way unlocks a lot more out of life You also no longer limit yourself just by what you think is possible Luck Surface Area (your chance of being lucky) Luck = (Passionate) Doing x (Effective) Telling Learning this changed a lot for me since I realized before starting on X I had no real exposure to luck Just doing isn't enough, you HAVE to tell There are 4 levers- human, capital, tech, media Learn how to take advantage of them all Why I’m just getting started I have no idea what I’m doing and I don’t ever really want to know I love doing things differently and looking at the same problem from multiple perspectives Realistically I’m going to have much much more success when I’m 30+ The way wealth accumulates and compounds I just will be making much larger bets with larger payouts I’m just playing around right now Trying to make mistakes and learn as much as I can with lower stakes Fucking around to find out What I can do in the next 10-20 years does excite me Even then I’ll just be getting started and hopefully will have no idea what I’m doing
