Developer in United Kingdom.
It’s okay not to achieve all of your goals 🤷♂️ (it’s a long one!) At the beginning of 2023 I said I wanted to ‘make products not just projects’… and I didn’t achieve it, I didn’t even come close. In 2022 I had focused heavily on building in public, and I planned to do the same in 2023, but with a focus on monetised products. So, I started the year working on building some products… until our year was throw upside down (see post below). I lost motivation, focus, and didn’t know why I was doing all of this anymore. Why was I grinding away learning to code and building projects after work? For what? What was the purpose? Who was it all for, if we weren’t going to have a family? I had spent almost 3 years working every hour I had so I could build a future for my (future) family, and our unsuccessful attempts at getting pregnant made me question everything about how I imagined our future would be. But then, in April, my focus changed and I found motivation again; I had been one of the final two candidates for a DevRel role I initially thought I didn’t stand a chance of getting, and it gave me a huge confidence boost. For the remainder of the year, I focused on improving my portfolio and gaining experience that would help me get into the world of DevRel, and allow me to make the leap from my day job as a teacher into the tech industry. Here’s a few of the things I did: 🎥 I started creating and sharing video content ⚡️ I ran a Supabase meet up in London 🗣️ I flew to Berlin to moderate We Are Developers Global Congress 2023 💻 I kept working on my existing projects (always!) Now, as 2023 ends, I didn’t achieve my coding-related goals, or at least not all of them, and that’s okay. I achieved some others that are really important to me (and that’s what matters). 2023 recap: ✅ After a tough road to get here, we’re finally having a daughter ❓ All that hard work has paid off, but I can’t discuss it yet 🤫 ❌ Build products not projects (watch this space) So, in 2024 my goals are to: 🍼 Raise a happy and healthy daughter 👨💻 Start building those products (I have 3 that are all getting close!) Thank you to everyone on here for being a part of this journey, and for being such a supportive community. Finish 2023 with a bang and I hope you all have an amazing day however you’re spending it 💛
