more of MY shenzhen experience (from a 华裔 perspective) not trying to overhype it, as the current foreigner queue at the hong kong shenzhen border is already long enough for me to deal with. what I love diversity: shenzhen is china’s ultimate hub for immigrants; most ppl you meet here are immigrants from somewhere, which makes them very welcoming and open to newcomers. convenience: the city is designed for ppl to work efficiently. you can get everything delivered within 20 min. any service you can think of exists here. a few examples: paying a rider to bring stuff for you, paying someone to drive your car home, renting electronics you only use once... healthcare: very affordable and accessible for everyone, even for foreigners without insurance. 100cny (about 12usd) for an ultrasound/scan which is 1/15 of the price in hk. you get results in one hour on an app with AI analysis, or pay 2 dollar extra for doctor's analysis, through online or offline. public transport: efficient public transport, affordable and driverless taxis to choose from, with fares from 2–8 usd in general accessibility: with a high-speed train at 350 km/h, you’re in hong kong in 15 min, and within a few hours, you’re in the rice fields close to the vietnamese border. leisure: the city offers countless options to relax; 24/7 spas where you can eat, watch movies, play sports. you can ski at the world’s biggest indoor ski resort. beaches and hiking trails are within an hour’s reach. others: the city is busy but very quiet thanks to the wide adoption of EVs. no extreme winter; average 15–20°c during the coldest period. what I dont internet: biggest downside for global builders imo. you need a vpn, and some good ones can be quite expensive. competitiveness: the city is moving fast. entrepreneurs scene can be really competitive with less financial support compared to the US. language: mandarin is still the main language, but it offers a good environment to learn chinese. foreigners I know speak fluent chinese after a few years in shenzhen. def not the case in hk. tax: higher income and company tax compared to hk. takes time to deeply understand china and how to do business: china is complex and changing rapidly. the advice I’m giving today may not apply tomorrow... others: summer is humid & hot with regular typhoons from june to august let's connect if you are building between shenzhen and hk, or planning to move here!
